Rocky Mountain Public Media

Creating a roadmap toward sustainability

The Colorado Capitol News Alliance (CCNA) is a statewide media coalition that provides award-winning statehouse coverage to Coloradans. It was supported by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which lost its federal funding in 2025. With that support gone, the coalition needed a new sustainability plan. Rocky Mountain Public Media (RMPM) engaged me to help the partners reimagine CCNA and figure out what it would take to sustain it, with support from the Boettcher Foundation and Colorado Media Project/Press Forward.

Working with the newsroom partners — Rocky Mountain PBS, KUNC, Colorado Public Radio, The Colorado Sun, and Rocky Mountain Community Radio, a network of rural stations), I designed and facilitated the planning process — I interviewed key staff and led a one-day, in-person Reimagining CCNA summit for editorial and other teams. I then worked with partner leadership and development staff to create a new Memorandum of Understanding and a 12-month roadmap to guide the coalition.

Together, these media organizations aren't just looking to do more of what they did before. They're finding ways to share more resources and build new funding sources so residents across the state get the news they need to hold their government accountable.
